Brazilian fashion valued during President Lula's inauguration.

Sunday, January 1, 2023

In the dark phase that the country was going through, I concentrated on the political clash, leaving my activity in fashion in the shadows. I trained in a fashion creation studio, which, in 1993, enabled me to found the first fashion NGO in the country, the Zuzu Angel Institute, and, the following year, the Academia Brasileira da Moda, which I chair. For some years I coordinated the election of the Best Dressed in Brazil, under the aegis of Eleanor Lambert, coordinator of the Election of the Best Dressed in the World, today held by Vanity Fair magazine. Long road, which led me to direct the first fashion museum institution in Rio de Janeiro, Casa Zuzu Angel/Museu da Moda, gathering an important collection. All this to say from my experience to comment on the costumes of the First Lady and Vice First Lady in the inauguration of the Lula/Alckmin Government, today. Janja Lula dared a very beautiful three-piece, with a Brazilian touch, coat, vest, pants. If it was a single piece, a dress, she would perhaps gain greater agility in arm movements to wave to the people. The suit over a vest, with a basque at the waist, ending in a wavy flap at the back, added volume to Janja's curvy feminine silhouette, an increasingly rare pattern - lucky for her - in this era of muscular and straight gyms. The golden color, in harmony with her skin tone, was a great success, as was the case with Lu Alckmin, for whom the white favored his dark skin and hair. Fashion is a game of shapes and colors, which can work in favor of those who wear it. One should praise Janja's concern for valuing Brazilian culture through fashion on big occasions, such as her wedding. I am familiar with this struggle, as it was a pioneer proposal from my mother, Zuzu Angel, who launched 'legitimate Brazilian fashion', valuing our roots with her work. The battle against the colonized fashion of the time was tough. Today, she would be happy to see the first lady's effort to enshrine her proposal. Thank you, Janja, for your dedication to Brazilian fashion and its true creators. And when Janja and Lu come to Rio I will be delighted to welcome them to the Zuzu Angel Museum.
